“Do it yourself” Diagramming Floor Plan
• It is important to have a do it Yourself scaled floor plan diagram drawing with length, width and floor to ceiling dimensions plus door and window locations, wall offsets and closets for all rooms. This is needed for proper quantity, labor and material costs. More details will provide a true estimate for your do it yourself project. Your home plan diagram, scaled drawing will be used to create a sketch drawing and is generated as a component of our estimate.
• Begin by drawing or diagramming a rough sketch of the existing floor plan of your house or walls that will be remodeled or changed and updated.

• Use 8.5 x 11” graph or drawing paper ¼” square. Each square = 1’.
• Starting a do it yourself drawing, always face in one direction all the time for instance, the front of the house and indicate on the drawing “Front” or “Rear” and left side and right side or north with an arrow. Then add in rooms with a room existing name or room number.
• Start in the corner of the first room for a floor plan and lay out the existing walls, windows, doors, wall offset and closets.
• Note: when making any changes to that existing rooms or walls or no change. Write your specific information on a different piece of paper. This would be each for room # or name etc. Also (very important) always indicate on each different drawing what room is in the front of or rear of or to the left side or right side of the joining room drawings and indicate North with an arrow.
• All dimensions of the room length and width, height floor to ceiling should be in feet and inches.
• Indicate where the door “D” location with an arrow for swinging left or right openings.
• Openings for window “W” location - W x L size of window.
• Show any walk though openings “OP” x L from one room to the other or hallways into living room.
• Note: foundation, slab, crawl or full basement. Indicate the height of the floor slab to the finished 1st floor and second floor, finish floor to finish floor. Or count the steps and what the height of each step to step is on your do it yourself drawing.
• Walls note concrete or block and furred out with 1x 2, wall thickness and height floor to ceiling.
• Indicate size of wall thickness, 4”, 6”, and 8” for interior or exterior walls.
• Draw in joining rooms, length and width, height floor to ceiling and wall off sets or setbacks.
• Draw closet “CL” locations on the walls and what type of door and swing if any.
• Note: length, width and height of each closet inside.
• Explain on a different sheet of paper what is in each room like wall materials, drywall, and trim size for base, like 2 1/4” or 2 1/2” or 3 1/2” etc. casing and or crown if needed. Other rooms may be diagramming are hallways, baths, bedrooms, living room, kitchen, dining etc.
• Indicate front, back, side, 1st floor, and 2nd floor.
• Indicate location of stairs or right or left turn from a landing and how many steps to each floor or landing. Closed hall for the stairs or open half of a wall or both sides are open. Length of the railing.
• For bath or kitchen remodeling and changes, add a new sheet drawings for diagramming each room for baths and kitchen. Indicate location nortn or next to bed room or front or back from etc.
• Sometimes rooms are offset from each other; indicate rooms that join each other but do not require any work. If rooms are sloped on the ceiling, measure from floor to low point and at the other end floor to high point of ceiling; indicate length, width, and location of slope with an arrow or sloped in both directions indicate center of the (floor) of the ridge to the inside of the outside wall .
• What would you like to have estimated or up dated, or added on interior rooms or on the exterior of the building?
• Make a list of new material and old material to be removed or connected to do it yourself drawings.
• If adding an addition note exterior stucco or siding, overhang size, type of roofing and pitch or slope hip or gable or other information do it yourself drawings.
• Indicate what rooms are to be painted, walls trim etc.
Adding a room or an addition to an existing house? What will the foundation be?
• Measure the back or side of the house from the corner to the new location do it yourself drawings.
• Note the exterior measurements length, width, height and any off sets.
• Note ground to first floor and to overhang or soffit height. Note how many steps from inside floor to the ground or walkway etc. Height to first floor from walkway.
• Sketch in the length, width and height of the new room.
• Indicate what type of room or rooms will be added to the existing house (bedroom, bathroom, sunroom, etc.). Sketch in as much information about the new rooms as possible using the guidelines above and different sheets for each room.
• On a different sheet of paper do it yourself drawings list all information for existing material and new material to match existing the diagramming sheets or drawings.
