Sub-decking is used for a working platform and base for finish flooring. This may be applied either diagonally in older homes or at right angles to the joists. Plywood should be installed with the grain direction of the outer plies at right angles to the joists and be staggered so that end joints in adjacent panels break over different joists. Interior and exterior includes primarily the vertical studs and horizontal members’ soleplates, top plates, and window and door headers of exterior and interior partition that support ceilings, upper level, and the roof. The partition also serves as a nailing base for covering materials. The partitions members used in conventional construction are generally nominal 2 by 4 inch studs spaced 16 inches on center. Headers over doors or windows in load bearing partition consist of doubled 2 by 10 inch and deeper members, depending on span of the opening.

Balloon framing is generally used where stucco or masonry is the exterior covering material in two story houses. The partitions are erected above the first level which extends to all edges of the building. A combination of platform construction for the first level sidewalls and full length studs for ends extending to the rafters of the gable ends is commonly used in single story houses. One common method of framing is the horizontal assembly on the sub level or tilt up of exterior or interior sections.

Ceiling joists are used to support ceiling finishes. They often act as joists for second and attic decking and as ties between exterior partition and interior partitions.
